As heavy rains begin to fall, Biblo notices that Gandalf is missing. When it starts to pour they stop to investigate a light. Their Biblo finds three trolls grumbling about food. Biblo decides to live up to title of burglar and attempts to pick one of the trolls’ pockets. However they quickly capture him. Because Judge Miller had a big house to live in, the book implied that he was wealthy. The trip to Seattle must of taken days and by then, Judge Miller would’ve been worried sick about his inseparable companion. As the story goes on, Buck’s first experience of snow left him feeling pretty stupid. When the train got to the station in Seattle, two men named Perrault and Francois bought him. There were many defections in history starting back in World War II when famous people like Albert Einstein defected to the use because the Germans discriminated again him being Jewish (pg. 124-5, Vol. 9 Funk & Wagnalls Encyclopedia). The more recent occurance of defection to the US of a high ranking deputy chief of staff del Pi¤o D¡az happened in 1987 (pg. 24, "A flight to freedom"). With water imagery, it is useful to consider that such imagery includes natural imagery of ice, sea and snow, all common features in the novel. Water, the antithesis of fire, represents the extreme point of cool reason, without any trace of passion. As we see Jane wander between these two points of temptation throughout the novel, the accompanying imagery of fire and water is most significant to our understanding of the themes and concerns of the novel. Even with the emotional plea from her husband, “Look up to heaven, and resist the wicked one,” (1590) Faith cannot resist the Devil's temptation and has “uncertain sorrow,” (1587) after submitting to him. The character of Faith which Hawthorne portrays is one of uncertainty and one which has a lack of self control. Faith is a good example of how Hawthorne uses a woman to symbolize a deeper significance, in this case, it is to evoke the hypocrisy .....

The secondary characters were Inspector Frank Bumstead, Dr. Daniel Poe Schreber, Emma Murdoch, Mr. Rain, Mr. Sleep, Mr. Quick, Mr. Wall, and all the rest of the Strangers that weren’t named.
