At the start of the story, Poe develops the plot of the story in a difficult manner. For example, Poe writes, "It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong." He could have just said in simpler terms, the revenge has to make to him feel like Fortunato felt when he wronged him.
