.... a different perspective upon everything that goes on in the book, as compared with the perspective of Tayo. There are two women in the book who put their perspective into the story, one of them is the elderly mistress of Josiah and the other one is Helen Jean who went on one of the many joyrides that Harley and the others went on. These women are actually just a way for the author to explain how the rest of society viewed Tayo. An example of this is when Helen Jean describes Tayo "Too quiet, and not very friendly(161)". .... Lung absorbed strength from the earth. It healed his spirit and he awoke ready to work. Wang Lung’s first experience away from his land was troubling for him. He had worked the land since the beginning of his life. He depended on it for his subsistence, as did his family. When a serious drought came, he had to abandon his land and travel in search of a way to feed his family. He and his family moved south, to a big city, where he found work. Although his family was fed, he still longed for his land. When he returned, he felt as though he had never been away from his land. He was happ .....

Through time Henry started to think about the battles in a different way, a more close and experienced way, he started to become afraid that he might run from battle when duty calls. He felt like a servant doing whatever his superiors told him. When the regiment finally discovers a battle-taking place, Jim gives Henry a little packet in a yellow envelope, telling Henry that this will be his first and last battle. The regiment managed to hold off the rebels for the first charge, but then the rebels came back like m .....

.... During the time of the story the house is also occupied by Jadine, who is Sydney's and Odine's niece. Jadine was took in by the Streets and they paid for her to go to school and become a model. Jadine came down from Paris to contemplate a marriage proposal from a Frenchman and to spend Christmas with her aunt and uncle. Jadine can be considered the in this story. She was taken in by the Street's and opened up to the world that they lived in. She got a wonderful education and traveled all over. She had a sense of security and knew that anything she needed would be given to her by the str .....

.... they escape separately and rejoin by chance at an island along the river, they find themselves drawn to get as far as possible from their home. Their journey down the river sets the stage for most of Mark Twain's comments about man and society. It is when they stop off at various towns along the river that various human character flaws always seem to come out. Examples of this would include the happenings after the bringing on of the Duke and King. These two con artists would execute the most preposterous of schemes to relieve unsuspecting townspeople of their cash. The game of the King pret .....

.... to be acknowledged as an adult, his actions are very immature and childlike. The act of cornering his mother for a gun is one good example of immaturity. Dave feels as though he can not ask his dad for the gun for fear of rejection, a perfect example of immaturity. Daves defiance to his mother’s rules is another example of immaturity. Dave’s mother agrees to allow Dave to buy the gun as long as he promises to bring it straight to her. He agrees to this, yet he does not go along with her wish. The next morning, Dave set out to the fields early to shoot his gun. He ends up accid .....

.... and thrown into a jail cell (75). Later on in the story, the same group of thieves forces him to rob a house at gunpoint (165). This encounter erupts when the tenants of the house find them, and Oliver ends up getting shot and thrown into a ditch (166). When he awakens, he staggers around half-dead, eventually reaching this same house that he was forced to rob and then abused by the tenants a second time. This is certainly plenty of action. Suspense begins to build when Oliver comes near to starvation in the workhouse that he is born in, rises when he is kicked out for asking for foo .....

This is best illustrated in the way Thomas Jefferson chose to run his household. He "sought to teach proper use of time to all the whites and blacks in his extended family" (Sobel 58). Plato's Allegory of the Cave greatly symbolizes man's struggle to reach the light of knowledge and the suffering of those left behind who are forced to sit in the dark of their ignorance and stare at shadows on a wall. I think the problem is with those who choose to stay in the dark. People are afraid, why, or is it simply that they are not ready? For the truth and reality both require change. People can only learn and acquire knowledge through reasoning and open-mindedness. I .....

.... When they do get out of prison they are still in the mafia. The only thing they learn from being in prison is to cover their tracks up better. People should pay for what they do and be punished properly. For example, if a man rapes a woman he should be castrated. This way people would have fear and not commit crimes. Torture is also a better punishment rather then death. When a person dies they don't pay for what they have done, they simply die. When they live with pain, they pay for it.
